Les Ponts de la Caille (Quail)
11th August 2000 Back to Arch back to Bridges back to Home Page
The Ponts de la Caille were built to cross a spectacular limestone gorge at Cruseille, between Annecy and Geneva, on the old road, not the autoroute. An informative booklet describes the 19th century suspension bridge and the 20th century two-hinged arch.
The first bridge was a Roman one, at the bottom of the gorge. When it became unsafe, another one was built, in 1780. It only lasted until 1813. The Charles Albert bridge, a suspension span, was built between 1838 and 1839 . It has 24 cables, supported by four round towers. two at each end connected by arches. No traffic now goes over this bridge, because a concrete arch was built between 1925 and 1932. The deck is supported on spandrel walls.
Both bridges complement the spectacular site very well.
